Is it posssible to use an endotracheal tube cuff pressure manometer instead of our manometer code 527.01 to measure PEEP when using Boussignac CPAP?
Generally, it is not. During endotracheal intubation with cuffed endotracheal tubes, manometers are used to check that the pressure of cuff does not exceed approximately 30 cmH2O. In case of a higher pressure, blood cannot circulate in the veins and arteries irrigating the trachea and this can cause severe damages to the trachea.When using CPAP Boussignac, the PEEP pressure we measure is generally comprised between 5 and 10cmH2O. In CPAP each cmH2O below 10 counts: It is important to know if the PEEP pressure is 5cmH2O, 6, 7 or 8.Consequently, the manometer used with CPAP Boussignac must have clear markings of each cm of water (starting at 1 cmH2O)and have a good precision: In the case of our manometer, the precision is + / - 0.4cmH2O.These features cannot be found in manometers used to measure cuff pressure of endotracheal tubes, that is why they cannot be used with CPAP Boussignac.
